He added that the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney is the eighth Indonesian representative to serve the issuance of E-Passports. Previously, the Directorate General of Immigration opened E-Passport services to Indonesian representatives in Singapore, Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (South Korea), The Hague (Netherlands), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Los Angeles (United States), and Berlin (Germany).

Electronic passports are equipped with a chip that stores biometric data. With more sophisticated security features, electronic passports are more secure from the potential for counterfeiting and make it easier for Indonesians in Australia who frequently travel internationally due to a more seamless immigration inspection process. The inauguration ceremony for the E-Passport service at the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pahala Mansury, the Indonesian Ambassador to Australia, Siswo Pramono, the Indonesian Consul General, Vedi Kurnia Buana, and the Indonesian community in Sydney. As a symbol of the inauguration of the E-Passport service, the Director General of Immigration Silmy Karim gave an E-Passport to Suherli Handajani, an Indonesian citizen in New South Wales who will turn 93 in October 2024. He then gave an E-Passport to a five-year-old Indonesian citizen, Asia Pithioud, who currently lives in Sydney. Ease of access to E-Passports helps Indonesians abroad when applying for visas to other countries. Especially to countries that have a preference for easier visa approval for electronic passport users.
